What a stay here actually feels like.

01
1,200 feet above the Pacific Ocean — every public space and guest room at Post Ranch frames an outlook that has no equal among inn properties in the continental USA.

02
Mickey Muennig's redwood-stilted tree houses — sitting at canopy level in the Big Sur forest with Pacific light filtering through redwood branches.

03
California cuisine on the Pacific cliff edge with a Wine Spectator Grand Award wine list — the dining room view that makes the drive worth it alone.

04
The Big Sur ridge at night — one of the few accessible dark sky sites in California, where the Milky Way is routinely visible and the stargazing program uses professional telescopes.

05
Heated pool and yoga platform on the 1,200-foot cliff — the Pacific horizon as the backdrop for both.

The final miles of Highway 1 into Big Sur — the road carved into the cliff face above the Pacific, the Big Creek Bridge, and then the Post Ranch entry road rising above it all.
Yoga on the open-air deck at 1,200 feet, Pacific to the horizon, Santa Lucia Mountains behind. The setting changes what yoga is.
Complimentary breakfast at the cliff-edge restaurant — the view through the floor-to-ceiling glass is the Pacific for as far as the eye can travel.
Guided walks through the 90-acre protected ridge property — redwood groves, coastal sage, endemic Big Sur wildflowers, and the particular quality of light filtered through Pacific marine layer.
Post Ranch's managed dark sky program: the Milky Way rising over the Pacific, guided with high-powered telescope, in one of the few accessible dark sky sites in California.
About
Post Ranch Inn is an adults-only luxury inn perched on a 1,200-foot cliff above the Pacific Ocean in Big Sur, California — one of the most dramatic and wild coastal landscapes in North America. The 40-room property sits on 100 acres of the Big Sur ridge, where the Santa Lucia Mountains meet the Pacific, and was designed by architect Mickey Muennig to blend into the landscape so completely that tree houses, cliff houses, and ocean houses disappear into the terrain rather than occupying it.
The ecological commitment at Post Ranch is fundamental: the inn set aside 90 of its 100 acres as protected land to preserve the Big Sur ecosystem, uses solar power and composting, and maintains the property's dark-sky status (one of the few accessible locations in California where the Milky Way is routinely visible). The Sierra Mar restaurant, perched on the cliff edge, serves a California wine country menu with one of the most dramatic dining views in the United States.
The spa at Post Ranch is small and intimate — a wellness offering designed to complement rather than compete with the landscape. Body treatments use botanicals from the surrounding Big Sur wilderness; the outdoor meditation labyrinth, cliffside yoga deck, heated pool, and wood-burning hot tub are positioned to use the Pacific horizon as backdrop. Post Ranch Inn is consistently ranked among the top small luxury hotels in the world and has been on the Condé Nast Traveller Gold List for multiple years.

FAQ
Post Ranch has five building types designed by Mickey Muennig: Ocean Houses (built into the cliff face, facing the Pacific), Tree Houses (on redwood stilts above the slope, blending into the forest), Mountain Houses (embedded in the ridge), Butterfly Houses, and the Coast House (a larger suite). Each has a private outdoor spa or fire pit, minibar, and spa tub. All have Pacific or mountain views.
Post Ranch is not all-inclusive. The room rate includes complimentary breakfast at Sierra Mar restaurant, access to all guided nature activities, yoga classes, and resort facilities. Dinner at Sierra Mar, spa treatments, and specialty activities are billed separately. The total daily spend depends on how much dining and spa is added to the room rate.
Post Ranch is at 47900 Highway 1, Big Sur, CA 93920. The most common routing: fly to San Francisco (SFO) or Monterey (MRY), then drive Highway 1 south along the coast. From Carmel: approximately 30 miles south on Highway 1 (approximately 30–45 minutes in normal conditions). Note: Highway 1 closures due to landslides occur periodically in winter and spring — check CalTrans before travel.
Big Sur's elevation, lack of light pollution, and the specific microclimate of the ridge create exceptional dark sky conditions. Post Ranch maintains its 100-acre property as a dark-sky zone and offers guided stargazing with high-powered telescopes — the Milky Way is routinely visible from the property on clear nights, which is rare for any property accessible from California cities.
Sierra Mar is Post Ranch's restaurant, built on the cliff edge with floor-to-ceiling glass opening to the 1,200-foot Pacific drop. The menu is California wine country cuisine with local Big Sur ingredients. The wine cellar holds over 3,000 labels and has won Wine Spectator's Grand Award — one of the most celebrated restaurant wine programs in the western USA. Breakfast (complimentary for guests) and dinner are served.
Daily yoga on the cliffside yoga deck (with Pacific horizon view), guided Big Sur hiking, the outdoor meditation labyrinth, the heated cliffside pool, wood-burning hot tub, and guided naturalist walks. The Post Ranch Spa offers botanical treatments using local wildflower and herb ingredients. The wellness offering is intimate and curated rather than comprehensive — the landscape is the primary wellness facility.
Post Ranch Inn is adults-only — guests must be 18 or older. The property and its activities are designed for adult guests, and children are not permitted.
Big Sur is beautiful year-round. Spring (March–May) brings wildflowers and waterfalls. Summer is fogged in the mornings (Big Sur fog is atmospheric rather than disappointing) and clear in the afternoons. Autumn is often the clearest and warmest season with the best dark skies. Winter is dramatic — storm waves below, Monarch butterflies migrating through Carmel nearby.
