Established in 1905 by Joseph Tapley, who named the property after Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia (where he had worked with Gilbert and Sullivan on the comic opera stage), the resort has operated continuously for over a century and is now in its fifth generation of family ownership. The current hosts — Brian and Carol, David and Megan, Piper and Beatrix, and Nancy — continue the Tapley family's tradition of informal, family-centred hospitality on Lake of Bays.

In 1905, Joseph Tapley and his wife Elizabeth left England, made their way through America, and eventually settled on land at the top of Haystack Bay on Lake of Bays in the Muskoka Highlands. Because of the shape of the bay and the quality of the sandy beach — unusual on this lake — Tapley named the property Bondi, after Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, where he had enjoyed a remarkable earlier career performing with Gilbert and Sullivan. The pioneer farm they built gradually evolved into a cottage resort as Tapley recognised what the lake, the land, and the scenery offered to visitors from Ontario's cities.
