About

About this getaway

Social Nature Movement (SNM) runs Auckland's SNM Bio Tour — a guided night kayak on glowing water around Torbay. Guests paddle after dark at Okura (high tide) or Waiake Beach (low tide), with Stanmore Bay and nearby Hibiscus Coast bays used when the bloom is strongest.

Tours typically run about two hours (often described as 2–3 hours), timed around tides, moon phase, and weather. SNM provides kayak, paddle, and a PFD with safety light. Transport is not included; an optional SNM Bio-Bus from SkyCity / SkyTower is NZ$50 return (about 30 minutes one way; meet one hour before start outside SkyCity/SkyTower).

Peak Auckland bioluminescence season is October–April on warmer, calmer nights. At Okura, SNM does not operate above 8 m/s wind or 2.4 mm rain; at Waiake the wind limit is 5 m/s with the same rain threshold. Book direct on socialnaturemovement.nz — MindReach takes no tour commission.

Social Nature Movement facilitates immersive outdoor experiences across Aotearoa — and the SNM Bio Tour is their signature night paddle on Auckland's North Shore. When dinoflagellates light up the surface, every stroke leaves a trail of sea sparkle in low-light Torbay bays.

FAQ

Good to know

What is bioluminescence?

Bioluminescence is a natural phenomenon where marine organisms create light through chemical reactions. In the water it appears as bright blue-green sparkles — often called sea sparkle — when disturbed. Per socialnaturemovement.nz.

Where do SNM Bio Tours launch?

Primary Torbay locations are Okura (high tide) and Waiake Beach (low tide); both are equally good per SNM. When Stanmore Bay or nearby Hibiscus Coast bays glow, tours may relocate for the best viewing.

When is peak Auckland bioluminescence season?

Peak season is October–April during warmer weather and water, ideally on dark, calmer nights. Bioluminescence varies naturally with conditions, moon phase, and blooms.

How long is the tour and what is included?

About 2 hours (also described as 2–3 hours). Includes kayak, paddle, and PFD with safety light. Transport is excluded. Optional Bio-Bus from SkyCity/SkyTower is NZ$50 return.

What weather limits apply?

Check weather before booking. At Okura SNM does not operate above 8 m/s wind or 2.4 mm rain; at Waiake the wind limit is 5 m/s with the same rain threshold.

Do I need kayaking experience?

Some basic paddling ability is recommended for night tours. SNM notes daytime introductory sessions can prepare guests for a night bioluminescence experience. Beginners are welcome when conditions suit.

What should I bring?

SNM's gear list includes thin merino or thermal shirt, fleece or wool jumper, rain-proof jacket, warm beanie, towel, torch, water shoes, personal medication, and a water bottle. SNM provides kayak, paddle, and PFD with safety light.

How do I book?

Book Okura or Waiake Bio Tour direct at socialnaturemovement.nz/auckland-bioluminescence-kayak-tour/, email support@snm.nz, or call 0800 76 62 66 (0800 SONAMO).
