The Linden Centre

Yang’s house is the original Linden Centre, opened in 2008 in Xizhou, a Bai village north of Dali. The compound was finished in 1948 as the home of the merchant Yang Pinxiang. It is a nationally protected heritage site: three courtyards, 16 guest rooms, a library of more than 2,000 books, a bar, a tea house, a tatami room, a children’s room, and a game room for mahjong, ping-pong, and billiards. Guests eat on the terrace from a seasonal Yunnan menu, and a tour of the house is included each day. People who are not staying may visit the ground floor of the first courtyard from 1 to 5 in the afternoon. Yan’s house is a ten-minute walk away. The building dates from 1928, opened in 2018 after four years of restoration, and has 14 rooms. It is nearly twice the size of Yang’s house, with dining rooms, a cafe, conference space, a gym, a yoga room, a massage room, a gallery, and a cooking school with flower and vegetable gardens.
