Songtsam Lodge Shangri-La

Songtsam Lodge Shangri-La is closed for now. As of 14 September 2026 the lodge is closed, with no confirmed reopening date, and is expected to reopen after May 2027.

This was the first Songtsam lodge, opened in 2001, in the farming village where founder Pema Dorjee grew up. Kena sits under the walls of Songzanlin Monastery, a two-minute walk away. The four-storey stone and timber house faces Lamuyangtso Lake. Elders still walk the circuit outside the monastery walls at dawn and dusk.

The rooms hold thangkas, antique furniture, copper, and woven carpets. There are 23 of them, twenty with a view of the lake or the court, from 29 to 64 square metres: Superior and Deluxe, king or twin, and a family room. One family room, one superior, and two deluxe rooms sit in the annex. The house also has a lobby bar, a restaurant of about 53 seats, a small shop, a book room, and a roof terrace.

The table is the village’s, at 3,280 metres: barley, buckwheat, potatoes, Tibetan pig, beef, mutton, tsampa, butter tea, and matsutake when the rains come. Diqing Shangri-La Airport is 12 kilometres away, about twenty minutes by car.
