About

About this getaway

Grist Haven Lodge sits on the south shore of Grist Lake, about 200 km northeast of Edmonton (roughly 2.5 hours south of Fort McMurray, or 3 hours north of Lac La Biche). The lake is small and deep -- about 3 miles long and 300 feet in spots -- with lake trout, whitefish, and northern pike. Nearby Jumbo Lake is a short walk for fly-fishing pike.

Stay types on gristlake.com: a native-log main lodge (living room, fireplace, licensed lounge, satellite TV) and six cozy log cabins on the white sandy beach. Cabins have bathrooms, showers, propane heat, a barbecue, a fire pit, and a kitchenette (propane fridge, 3-burner cooktop, dishes, cutlery, pots and pans). Guests supply their own food, sleeping bags, and towels.

An RV campground on the north shore, adjacent to the airstrip, has washrooms, tables, and fire-pit areas but no other services. Boat charters are 14-foot aluminum boats with 15 HP 4-stroke engines, fuel, and life jackets (Alberta boat-safety course required). Open year-round for fishing, ice fishing, hiking, ski-dooing, cross-country skiing, quadding, and photography. Call 780-594-1254 or email fishing@gristlake.com. Mailing address: Box 1350, Cold Lake, AB T9M 1P3. They recommend a 4x4 or SUV after rain.
